Free Enterprise
The Reason America Loves its Economy
“America is the most worthless excuse for a nation on earth. Not because of Iraq or Bush but because their culture and society are worthless. The country should be dissolved into Canada or even Mexico." -Philippine de Dalle, France. This quote and more have been openly exclaimed on the Love Us Hate Us website, where everyone can see it. Not all of the comments on this site are negative, but there are enough to prove that too much of the world hates America, and America wants to change that. America has lots of good traits, and one of those traits is a government and economy that complement each other because of their similarities.
Our government system is known as a democracy. For those of you that do not know, a democracy is when the entire population has a role in leading the government. The citizens may lead directly, or, like our government, they may vote on a leader that best represents them (What is
Democracy?).Our economic system is called free enterprise. In it, anyone can start a business, and the government only interferes if safety is an issue. This automatically means that the people are indirectly in charge of the economy
(Remy 26).
What do democracy and free enterprise have in common? The people rule in both instances. Some people may think that the people rule a little differently between the systems. It is true that the methods are different. In democracy, the people decide the leaders, but in free enterprise, the people set up all of the businesses and decide which ones stay by keeping them in business. However, the people still rule in a general sense, so how they rule is irrelevant.
Do these systems fulfill their purposes? The role of a government is to give its citizens as much liberty as possible without giving them the right to hurt each other. The government’s role in economy is to give the consumers a right to buy and sell fairly. In democracy and free enterprise the people (or consumers) rule, and it’s only common sense that the people will not attack their own rights. Therefore, the systems carry out their roles quite nicely.
What’s the big deal about the people ruling? The people that like America like it for this main reason: The American Dream. According to Merriam-Webster, the American Dream is “An American social ideal that stresses egalitarianism [equality of mankind] and especially prosperity; also: the prosperity of life that is this ideal (American Dream) (WordNet Search).”Basically, this means that you can achieve financial success and reach your personal goals. Furthermore, you have as good of a chance of doing so as anyone else in the nation, no matter your race, religion, social status, or any other factor that makes you unique. In fact, the only thing that may hold you back is safety, science, and your own will.
This can be a lot easier when the government doesn’t monitor and control your activities and finances closely. Now consider: if you had a government that let the people rule, but an economy that did not, they would cancel out on each other, and society would collapse. The same goes the other way around. With a government and an economy that don’t conflict, business can progress, and people can achieve their dreams. This is why free enterprise compliments democracy so nicely, and this is part of why America is so amazing.
